The dining car is one of the train cars the Polar Express pulls that appears in the "Scrooge's Plan" and "Hot Chocolate" levels of The Polar Express: The Video Game.
Role in the video game[]
In "Scrooge's Plan", while Hero Boy searches for all the tickets, he runs into Know-It-All, who tells him some puppets lead by the Ebenezer Scrooge puppet are in the dining car with his ticket and will not give it back. Hero Boy and the puppets have a food fight and Hero Boy gets the ticket back. After the food fight, the car is a mess, hero boy told know-it-all that the puppets started the fight. When Hero Boy gives the ticket back to Know-It-All, who tells him they better leave the car before the cook finds out about what happen to the food.
In "Hot Chocolate", after Scrooge is defeated, the Conductor shows up and invites the children to the dining car for refreshments, which include hot chocolate and cakes. However, they are short one waiter, so Hero Boy is asked to fill in. He learns how to serve the other children by watching what the other waiter does and copying his moves. Afterward, Hero Girl gives Hero Boy a refreshment she saved for him, then asks the Conductor if they can give Billy some hot chocolate, which he agrees to.
Basis[]
Just like all the passenger cars the dining car closely resemble steel heavyweight passenger cars built by the Pullman Company in the 1920's and 1930's. They were used by several railroads in the United States and today can be found at various preserved railroads across the country.
Livery[]
The dining car's livery is the same as that of the other passenger cars: blue with a red stripe going along the side windows and a black roof. In some merchandise lines, the words "Polar Express" also appear in yellow on the sides above the windows, which is only on one of the other passenger cars and below the windows in the film.
Trivia[]
- The car is not seen in the book. In the film, one of the passenger cars is briefly transformed into a dining car so the children can get served hot chocolate, but there is not a separate dining car.
- Unlike in the film, where the children are only served hot chocolate, there are also cakes, muffins, and cookies.
- Most dining cars in real life have kitchens in them, but not the dining car in The Polar Express. Instead, there is a separate kitchen car which is seen in "The Lost Ticket" and "Toys! Toys!" levels.
