— Hero Boy's parents shaking the silver bell

Hero Boy's parents are two characters from the 1985 book, The Polar Express and the 2004 film of the same name. They are the mother and father of Hero Boy and Sarah.

Role in the Book

At the end of the book, Hero Boy and Sarah were listening to the beautiful sound of the silver bell. However, their parents could not hear it due to not being true believers of Santa, though they assumed it was because it was broken.

Role in the Film

In the beginning of the film, they take Sarah upstairs to get her ready for bed. Hero Boy, who saw their shadow from the stairs, initially thought it was Santa Claus until Sarah got off of her father's shoulders, prompting him to run back to his room. From there, through the key hole, he watches his parents tuck Sarah into bed. She tells them about a story she was told by someone about Santa needing to travel faster than light in a sled larger than an ocean liner in order to deliver so many presents in one night. Her father assures her that he must have been joking while her mother tells her Santa will only come if she goes to sleep.

The next morning, they are woken up by an excited Sarah. After Hero Boy finds the silver bell he lost last night and rings it, he hands it to his mother who also shakes it, but cannot hear a sound. His father shakes it too, but also hears nothing. He notes that it must be broken and hands it back to Hero Boy. Later, mother calls her children to go somewhere and Hero Boy puts the bell on the table before leaving.
