Behind the scenes[]
Chris Van Allsburg modelled the children in the book on neighbors of writer David Macaulay.[2] The children in the film are loosely based on those in the book.[1]
Sometimes, a specific shot was framed to avoid having children appear because scenes with large amounts of children on-screen proved to be expensive.[3] Initially, shots that did feature more children caused Maya to crash frequently. The animators went around this by splitting the scenes into smaller parts and putting them together after they were rendered.[4]
