- This article is about the song. For the bell, see Silver bell.
Silver Bells is a popular Christmas song composed by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. It was first sung by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards in October 1950. Kate Smith did a cover version in 1966, which is featured in the 2004 film The Polar Express and as the twelfth track on its official soundtrack.
After Hero Boy, Hero Girl, and Billy leave the turntable through a tunnel, they make it to a village where they hear the song playing. They soon pass by a building where Hero Boy finds an entire room of record players, one of which is playing the song. It begins skipping like the one that played "Winter Wonderland" earlier and repeatedly goes, "ring-a-ling."
Lyrics[]
- City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
- Dressed in holiday style
- In the air there's a feeling of Christmas
- Children laughing, people passing
- Meeting smile after smile
- And on every street corner, you'll hear
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- It's Christmas time in the city
- Ring-a-ling1 (ring-a-ling)
- Just hear them ring (hear them ring)
- Soon it will be Christmas Day
- (City street lights, even stoplights
- Blinking bright red and green)
- As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
- (Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
- This is Santa's big scene)
- And above all the bustle you'll hear
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- It's Christmas-time in the city
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- Silver bells (silver bells)
- Soon it will be Christmas Day
- 1 = This is where the record player playing the song in the film starts skipping.
